Why Beer Line Cleaning Is Important

Clean beer lines mean better tasting beer, less beer waste, more beer sales, and happier customers overall!

Beer distributors typically clean their lines once every two weeks. If you are a home bar owner, you should clean your beer lines at least once a month and/or when you change a keg.

Also, if you’re going on vacation or simply not planning to use your kegerator for an extended period of time, your beer lines should be cleaned as well.

Cleaning Your Beer Lines Using Beer Tools

For proper cleaning, you will need draft beer line cleaning kit or the following tools:

  • Cleaning pump
  • Beer line cleaning solution
  • Spanner wrench
  • Keg lifter (to take the ball off of the coupler)
  • Faucet brush
  • Pot to collect the beer as it comes out of the system

A typical cleaning process would look like this:

  1. Turn off your CO2
  2. Take out your kegerator and disconnect the coupler
  3. Put the pot on top of the kegerator and put the line in it
  4. Use the spanner wrench to loosen up the faucet, then take the faucet apart and put the pieces in the pot
  5. Fill the cleaning pump with hot water, add some beer line cleaning solution, and then connect the pump to where the faucet was
  6. Pump the solution into the system - this will clean out all the residue and beer stone in your lines
Meanwhile, you can also clean your faucet using the cleaning brush to clean all the holes on the faucet, including threads and faucet shaft since that’s where beer stone tends to form. When you’re done, reconnect it - it should go back together really easy.
  7. After 5 minutes have passed, pump clean water through the system to clean out the beer solution
  8. Reattach your faucet, keg, and other elements. It’s done! Now you’re ready for another round of nice, cold beer.
