Understanding which beer lines and fittings you might need requires a bit of knowledge about the draft beer system in general – what components it consists of, how they are connected, and how it all works together.
A typical draft beer system would include the following elements:
Gas tank (CO2 or nitrogen can be used depending on the type of the beer)
Gas regulator (ideally, both primary and secondary gas regulators are required)
Air line (a food-grade PVC tube)
Keg
Keg coupler
Beer line (a food-grade PVC tube that typically runs for about 5 feet for direct-draw beer systems)
Shank (a small metal tube that anchors your draft beer tower faucet solidly to the refrigerator wall or draft beer tower)
Faucet
Draft beer tower
Tap handle
Beer line connectors
Here are the points where the elements of a draft beer system connect to each other and where you might require keg connectors and kegerator fittings:
CO2 tank – CO2 regulator connection
CO2 regulator – air line connection
Air line – keg coupler connection
Beer line – keg coupler connection
Beer line – shank connection
Shank – faucet connection
Depending on your particular draft beer dispensing setup, you may need a different type of keg connector fittings. In case of kegerator beer line replacement, a keg hose connector is also required.
Beer pipe fittings (also known as keg fittings) connect the dispensing equipment to the kegs, ensuring proper flow, sealing, and connection integrity between the keg and beer lines. The two arguably most important fittings are tail pieces and connectors.
Tail pieces are used to connect the trunk line to the faucet or shank. They usually have a barb or threaded end, allowing for a secure connection.
Connector join sections of a beer line together, allowing for easy installation and disassembly. They are available in various sizes and types, such as barbed, push-fit, or threaded connectors.
Beer gas line fittings are used to connect the gas supply, typically CO2 or nitrogen (N2), to the keg in order to maintain the proper pressure required for dispensing beer. CO2 quick connect fittings are used for Cornelius kegs.
Gas line fittings should be properly sized, compatible with the gas supply, and regularly inspected for wear and tear to maintain the integrity and safety of the beer dispensing system.
